2019-2023 Dodge 6.7 Cummins CR
Ram's 5th Generation Heavy-Duty trucks made a splash in January 2019 with the release of a brand new 6.7L Cummins engine. The most significant update was the high-output version of the engine, which was the first diesel engine to produce 1,000 lb-ft of torque. The engine's impressive specs, which included a CGI block, a fresh cylinder head, a different valvetrain, lower compression pistons, and a higher flowing turbo, made headlines in automotive publications worldwide.
The new engine was paired with an Aisin transmission in the Ram 3500, which gave the trucks a whopping 1,000 lb-ft of torque and 400 horsepower right out of the factory. Even the standard trucks were impressive, producing 850 lb-ft of torque and 370 horsepower when paired with the 68RFE automatic transmission.
The 5th Generation Cummins was not just about engine power, though. Ram also introduced a new, stronger frame, a larger rear axle, and suspension improvements, which helped the trucks achieve several best-in-class accolades, including fifth-wheel towing, conventional towing, payload, gasoline horsepower, and even interior storage in the Mega Cab.
Two years later, Ram updated the high-output Cummins to produce a segment-leading 1,075 lb-ft of torque, making properly-equipped 3500 models capable of lugging 37,100 pounds. The engine featured a compacted graphite iron (CGI) block, a redesigned cast-iron head, and a valvetrain that made use of hydraulic lifters instead of solid roller lifters. The high-output version had a compression ratio of 16.2:1, while the standard output engine had a ratio of 19.0:1.
To handle the new Cummins' impressive torque, the Aisin AS69RC transmission received several updates, including stronger planetary gears. Early build date '19 trucks experienced harsh shifting issues, but dealer reflashes with shift strategy updates helped quell most of the Aisin's quirks. Ram's 68RFE automatic was also offered behind the standard output 6.7L Cummins. However, Ram no longer offered the G56 manual transmission or any manual transmission for that matter.
