There is a new option available for the 2003-2007 Ford 6.0 Powerstroke engines when it comes time for turbo replacement. Most customers are buying replacement turbos from Ford directly or a turbo “rebuilder” network that has appeared over the past couple years to address the demand for replacement 6.0 Powerstroke stock turbo chargers.
The product being offered through Ford Dealers is a rebuilt turbocharger. While it is labeled as a remanufactured product, technically it is not. A remanufactured product, by definition, is brought back to original equipment standards. The supplier of these units to the Ford network is not Garrett.
Further, there have been several instances that demonstrate the inferior nature of this product. These things include daily calls received by Garrett/Honeywell from vehicle owners complaining of the repeat and/or premature failures of this product. Analyses of several rebuilt units have found numerous faults, mainly with the VNT mechanism due to the relative lack of general industry knowledge regarding this device and its suitability for reuse by specific application. The operating conditions of the 6.0 liter engine cause the turbo VNT mechanism to be completely worn out by approximately 125K miles and therefore should not be reused.
Also in these analyses, micro cracks in compressor wheels are being found be- cause too many rebuilders are over-salvaging parts to help lower costs. This will cause premature compressor failure from cycle fatigue.
These brand new turbochargers eliminate all the problems with rebuilt units currently in the market and also are offered at a competitive price. This is the absolute best option when replacing you stock 6.0 Powerstroke turbocharger.
